Resistance exercise decreases - endorphin immunoreactivity

چکیده
Previous research investigating the response of plasma P-endorphins (13-EP) to resistance exercise has resulted in equivocal findings. To examine further the effects of resistance exercise on 3-EP immunoreactivity, 10 male and 10 female college-age students participated in a series of controlled isotonic resistance exercises. The session consisted of three sets of eight repetitions at 80% of one repetition maximum (1-RM) for each of the following exercises: (1) bench press; (2) lateral pull-downs; (3) seated arm curls; and (4) military press. Blood plasma was sampled both before and after the lifting routine and P-endorphin levels were determined by radioimmunoassay. A Students t test for paired samples indicated that mean(s.e.) plasma P-endorphin levels after exercise (10.5(1.3) pg R-EP ml-') were significantly decreased as compared with pre-exercise (control) levels (16.5(1.2), P< 0.05). While the mechanism(s) contributing to the decrease in immunoreactivity is unclear, it may be the result of the synergistic effect of R-EP clearance during rest intervals and changes in psychological states between sampling.

متن کاملPlasma opioid peptide responses during heat acclimation in humans.
Plasma beta-endorphin, Met-enkephalin and Peptide F immunoreactivity (ir) were measured at rest and following exercise on three days (days 1, 4, 8) of an eight day heat acclimation regime. Fourteen male subjects demonstrated physiological heat acclimation adaptations. Our data demonstrated a differential response of peripheral plasma levels of endogenous opioid peptides (EOP) to exercise in the...
متن کاملThyrotropin-releasing hormone decreases plasma beta-endorphin level in traumatic tetraplegics--a possible therapeutic agent.
Beta-endorphin and ACTH are concomitantly secreted by the pituitary in response to acute stress and both possess identical regulatory mechanisms (1). Intravenous administration of opioid antagonist naloxone (10 mg) decreased plasma ACTH levels in schizophrenic patients (2). Opioid agonist. morphine (50 mg/kg). administered intraperitoneally elevated plasma beta-endorphin immunoreactivity (3). S...
متن کاملEndogenous opioids modify dyspnoea during treadmill exercise in patients with COPD.
Exogenous opioid drugs, such as morphine, relieve breathlessness. The present study hypothesis was that endogenous opioids, released during the stress of exercise, modify dyspnoea in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. After familiarisation, patients performed an incremental treadmill exercise test followed by constant work on the treadmill for 10 min. At subsequent visits (2 t...
متن کاملCharacterization of pro-ACTH/endorphin-derived peptides in rat hypothalamus.
The proteolytic processing pattern of pro-ACTH/endorphin in rat hypothalamus is similar to the pattern in the pars intermedia; peptides the size of beta-endorphin, gamma-lipotropin (gamma-LPH), corticotropin-like intermediate lobe peptide (CLIP), alpha-melanotropin (gamma-MSH), joining peptide, and glycosylated gamma 3-MSH all represent predominant end products. Equimolar amounts of beta-endorp...
